SCHEDULE for ACTING SHAKESPEARE'S VERSE

This fall's cycle will consist of seven classes on Tuesdays or Thursdays organized around ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL (Tuesdays) or OTHELLO (Thursdays).

All classes, including the free sample classes will be given at Shetler Studios, 244 W. 54th Street, on Tuesday, June 20th and Thursday June 22nd, and repeated Thesday June 27th and Thursday June 29th. Total time for both sections of the free classes on any day is three hours. As to how the time is allocated, please see the table below. It is in two sections, because I am trying to make it possible both for those who get off work at 5PM, and those who have to be at work at 6PM to have the entire thrilling experience, including the out-of-body experience.

You may come to any one, or to all. The free classes are FREE.

I would like you to let me know you're coming, so I know how many chairs to unfold. (212) 865-1127 or delossbrown@prodigy.net.

One-half of the free classes will be on verse technique--but the other half will be on acting. I ask participants (that's you!) to bring in monologues they'd like to work on, but I'll also have some monologues available.

This cycle will last for seven Tuesdays or Thursdays. All classes, including the free ones, will be taught at beautiful Shetler Studios, at 244 West 54th Street, not only for the ambience, but also for the air conditioning.

ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL: Shakespeare wrote this comedy when he was at the height of powers, and knew it, and was no longer afraid to let his ability show. It is a very, very clever play, and also very funny (when he wants it to be) and sometimes almost tragic--but it never falls into tragedy. The chief progagonist, heroine and miracle worker is Helena, whom George Bernard Shaw admired greatly. (Shaw frequently thought Shakespeare was a commercial hack.) One of Helena's monologues is on Karen's dreaded list, but Helena has even better ones, which are not "overdone."

OTHELLO: everybody knows that it's an amazing play, and I hope to show some of the things that Shakespeare did to make it amazing. One of the hints stares you in the face every time you look at the play's cover. "What!?" "Aha."

This schedule is designed to interfere minimally with the Fourth of July and with Labor Day and the barbecue. There is, however, a class on Assumption Day, which is also Napoleon's birthday, but the procession will be over before the class begins.
